“The Nearly makes audio-visual-electro-ADHD-witch-acid-rave-house.”
Depending on which zines you were reading in the early 2010s, The Nearly’s 40-second average songs either represented, “the future of pop music” or, upon listening, would make you, “feel physically sick.” Given how TikTok reduced all pop music to short clips in the decade that followed this album, both may well be possible. In any case, this was a project that attempted to combine the sound of electro with the brevity of thrash, with live shows that continued the intimidation of audiences first expressed through Mixomatosis. Plans for a second album by The Nearly have been gestating for over a decade. I don’t know when it will happen, but when it does, it will happen very quickly.
